Danish Cinema: Festen (The Celebration or Dogme #1) Review

Festen is Thomas Vinterberg’s first and only film under the Dogme Manifesto. The manifesto of 10 rules that he and Lars Von Trier created was an experiment in filmmaking and a way to create purity within in the process. Dogme was also an anarchist movement against cinematic convention, a game if you will. They set themselves a challenge and found that great films could be made under strict limitations. However, Dogme became fashionable (there’s Dogme furniture in Denmark!) and no longer a rebellion, which is why Festen is Vinterberg’s first and only Dogme film.

 
 

Festen follows a family gathering that turns into chaos and darkness after the eldest son, Christian makes a speech that reveals that he was sexually abused as a child by his father. What makes Festen a compelling watch is how information is slowly drip-fed to the audience; it’s as if we are also guests at the party, learning the truth as events unfold. Moreover, the Dogme filming style furthers this feeling of being one of the guests. The lo-fi lighting and home movie quality of the footage allows us to experience the story as if it is real and that it is us behind the camera capturing the party as it spirals out of control.

Indeed, it is high praise if Bergman himself tells you that your film is a masterpiece, and that’s precisely what happened to Vinterberg. Funnily, Vinterberg then confessed that he had ‘stolen’ a scene from Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander, the moment where all the guests dance through the house (Bergman then countered that he has stolen that from Visconti’s The Leopard). Personally, that is one of my favourite moments of Festen as it shows how chaotic family gatherings can be. Also, the fact that everyone is partaking in a family tradition while simultaneously trying to carry on as normal and ignore Christian’s shock confession is just so darkly comedic. In fact, because the father is so successful and influential, most people can’t believe the truth, and it is only later in the film in a powerful scene that everything is settled. Still, you are completely sucked into the film willing Christian to get through to people until that crucial moment. 

It should also not come as a surprise that Festen has become a successful stage play, having been performed in 15 different languages thus far. It’s easy to see why due to the compact cast and limited setting (the whole film was shot at Skjoldenæsholm Castle) and I personally would love to see how it translates onto the stage as films are often based on plays rather than becoming one later (to my knowledge that is).

These are my final reads of the year and a Top 5 of the best books I read in 2020.

December Books

The Invention of Love by Sara Schaff

This Ok, but completely forgettable collection of short stories was an advance copy I got from Netgalley, and tbh I feel like maybe one story out of the lot was interesting. I feel like recently my reading choices are very hit and miss. Schaff’s stories focus on women, and quite a few of them have no dimensions at all, and some are just completely dull, like the story about siblings trying to sell a rundown house. Yawn.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (Das Parfum. Die Geschichte eines Mörders) by Patrick Süskind

What a disappointment. I felt like my expectations of this book couldn’t be further from what it actually was. I thought I would get a creepy Paris set novel that follows a warped murderer as he terrorises the city. Instead, it was a boring story that flirted slightly with the creepiness but felt more like something Flaubert would write (which isn’t necessarily bad in itself I just didn't expect this tone). I nearly gave up when he was in the cave for years, and then the weird perfume induced orgy was a massive eye roll moment. All in all, I don’t get the hype it was a complete waste of my time, and I could probably have read a few other books in the time it took me to force myself to finish this one!

The Englishman by Douglas Stuart

I read this short story by recent Man Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart for the very reason of seeing whether I like his writing style enough to read his award-winning book Shuggie Bain. Short answer, Yes, I do. The Englishman was published in The New Yorker and follows a young gay Scottish man who takes a trip down to London to stay with the eponymous Englishman as part of an “arrangement”. The short story is beautifully written and explores the naivety of the narrator wonderfully. I will most likely be picking up Shuggie Bain very soon as a result.

I Have the Right to Destroy Myself (나는 나를 파괴할 권리가 있다) by Kim Young-ha

This is my 3rd re-read. I don’t normally re-read books very often, but this concise book fascinates me. I love Kim’s writing, his imagination and how dark this story is. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend it but be warned it is very dark.

Best Books of 2020

Last year I read 58 books, some of them were short stories (do they even count?) and others were absolute mammoths! Overall, these are the 5 books that stood out above the rest, the books that had me hooked and voraciously consuming page after page.

Seasons of Migration to the North by Tayeb Salih

This book was introduced to me through Uni as it was on my year 3 reading list, which I will forever be grateful for as this novel blew me away. It’s dark, unexpected and beautifully written and has helped me expose how ignorant I was (and still am) about colonialism. I will forever continue to re-read this book and recommend it to everyone as it’s not only an important portrait of Black Arab culture in Post-Colonial Sudan; it’s a stunningly realised novel.

The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu

This book is hardcore sci-fi but infinitely readable that in itself is a feat. I found The Three-Body Problem unputdownable and being a slow reader that can take weeks, months or sometimes a year to finish a book this is high praise. I love how it mixed past and present and how the layers of mystery unfolded as you read on. I have the rest of the trilogy ready and waiting, and I have actually made a start on the next book The Dark Forest.

Heroes and Villains by Angela Carter

I’ve been a fan of Carter ever since reading and studying The Bloody Chamber back in school for A-Level literature. I think she will forever be one of this country’s greatest writers. Heroes and Villains is set in a post-apocalyptic world and reads like a dreamy, nightmarish fairytale.

Untold Night and Day by Bae Suah

This book unravels like a strange dream or a fragmented film where recurring motifs become unsettling and have you guessing where the boundaries between reality and fantasy merge within the narrative. Suah’s prose is also rather magical, and this is perhaps my favourite work of hers that I’ve read so far.

Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert

I really enjoyed Madame Bovary, and that’s probably mostly down to Flaubert’s wit, and perhaps to a certain degree, the translation by Magaret Mauldon as this book reads very easily which isn’t always the case when it comes to classics. I also think Emma is a fascinating protagonist. She almost feels quite modern the way her imperfections are laid bare and her distaste for the banality of marriage and provincial life.

Honourable mentions: Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Naiv. Super. by Erlend Loe and The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro.

5 Reasons Why You Should Watch The Serpent

Assuming that you haven’t already binged this 8-part mini-series detailing the murders of notorious 70’s serial killer Charles Sobhraj aka The Bikini Killer or The Serpent (where the series takes its name), let me convince you as to why you should.

Tahar Rahim & Jenna Coleman 

My oh my, Rahim and Coleman are exceptional in the roles of Charles Sobhraj and Marie-Andrée Leclerc. TBH, I will watch anything Rahim is in after watching his breakout film A Prophet. And unsurprisingly Rahim absolutely kills it (no pun intended) as a creepy, charismatic killer… it’s very unsettling just how good he is! And Coleman, I have only ever seen her in Doctor Who but she makes Leclerc 3 dimensional and has you wondering whether she is actually a victim or just a killer throughout.

70’s Vibes

The fashion. The hair. The music. I must admit that I am obsessed with the ’60s and ’70s, and I love the mise-en-scène in this show, everything on screen feels tangible and immersive. I can tell that Jenna Coleman’s hair and wardrobe is going to be everyone’s obsession.  

Great Storytelling

This is on the edge of your seat shouting at the TV stuff. The tension is so palatable, and I found myself cringing and trying to advise characters not to make the decisions they inevitably make (why do we do this 😂). Some people don’t like the flitting between timelines, but I personally like it, it adds suspense and makes you focus.

To Travel Vicariously 

Ah, in the era of Corona we can only travel through our screens. This show could not have aired at a better time here in the UK, we are in Lockdown 3.0, and it’s absolutely freezing! Hong Kong, Thailand, Nepal, Pakistan, France and India are a welcome escape from a dreary winter in England, even if this jet-set trip is rather gruesome.

The Cinematography 

Luscious colour palettes, film footage montages and surveillance like zooms are just some of my favourite things about The Serpent’s cinematography. The way a TV show or film is shot is infinitely fascinating to me; I love analysing what a camera movement could mean or why a specific colour palette has been employed. In The Serpent, the cinematography serves to build tension and immerse the viewer in its timeline. Film footage instantly makes it feel retro, and those surveillance zooms make you nervous and think that someone is in danger. The colour palette is almost oppressive in its lushness, mirroring the headiness of occupying the same space as Sobhraj.

The Serpent is available to watch in the UK on BBC 1 @ 9 pm on Sundays or to binge on BBC iPlayer (Elsewhere on Netflix soon)

Best Films of 2020

In a year of unparalleled weirdness and chaos, at least we had movies. I find that films are the best kind of distraction and while I didn’t get to see many films in the Cinema I did still get to watch a few new releases thanks to services like Mubi, BFI Player and of course Netflix. So here are my top films of 2020.

Parasite directed by Bong Joon-ho

Yes, I am fully aware that this film came out in 2019 for most people, but here in the UK, we got Parasite in cinemas at the beginning of 2020 before the world went to shit. And it’s literally a masterpiece. Hilariously dark and with a biting social commentary Parasite is Bong at his best. If you haven’t seen this film yet you most definitely should, it broke records and has made people think twice about subtitle prejudice finally! Look out for a full review on here soon.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire directed by Céline Sciamma

Portrait of a Lady on Fire may be the most beautiful and heartfelt love story I have seen in ages, I was sobbing throughout the last 20 or so minutes, and I can’t stop thinking about it. Emma. directed by Autumn de Wilde

Stylish, aesthetic and thoroughly good fun Autumn de Wilde’s Emma. is a delight to behold. I found myself just utterly enamoured by this whole film, and I think a rewatch may be on the horizon as it’s buoyancy and frivolity would be the most welcome distraction from lockdown 3.0.

The Woman Who Ran directed by Hong Sang-soo

Hong Sang-soo's latest film is a smart and witty look at female relationships and troublesome men. The thing I absolutely love about Hong’s films is that they always feel like the lives on display exist in reality, that if the camera weren’t rolling, everything would happen that way regardless. DNA directed by Maïwenn

DNA explores the void left by losing a loved one and how grief can bring out the worst in you or bring you back in touch with your roots. Neige clings to her grandfather through the things he left behind and her connection to Algeria through him. Filled with drama and some necessary injection of humour, this is a compelling film that will leave you questioning the fabric of your own familial bonds.

Films I should have watched but didn’t (for some unknown reason)

Small Axe Anthology directed by Steve McQueen

I love Steve McQueen’s work, but his films are emotionally brutal. Small Axe is an anthology series that focuses on Black lives in moments in modern British history and looks to be some of his most powerful work yet. I will be watching these important films imminently.

The Wild Goose Lake directed by Diao Yinan

I missed this film at the 2019 London East Asian Film Festival to my annoyance, and then the film became available on MUBI, and I missed it again. I really should have watched it when I had the chance.

Les Misérables directed by Ladj Ly

I am learning French, love social realism films, and films loosely inspired by literary works…don’t even get me started! As to why I haven’t watched this film yet, I don’t know the answer. I keep going to put it on, and then I decide to watch something else, I think it’s because there is just too much choice. Also, on some platforms like Mubi or All4, you only have a limited time to watch certain movies, whereas Netflix seems to keep titles in its library for much longer. But as I am trying to get fluent in French by the end of 2020, I will most definitely be watching this one ASAP!

Most disappointing film of 2020

Tenet directed by Christopher Nolan

I was so excited about this film, the trailers looked great, the cast is phenomenal, and normally, Nolan delivers a smart and intelligent blockbuster. But with Tenet I think Nolan tried to be clever for the sake of being clever. If you strip away all the time stuff then it’s a just another spy movie, complete with a bad caricature villain and the usual underdeveloped female character. But what made this film the most infuriating to watch was the sound engineering! I like to hear what characters say, especially in a film when 90% of the dialogue is exposition! For anyone in a non-English speaking country, they undoubtedly benefited from the inclusion of subtitles so perhaps after a re-watch (with subtitles) I might go a little easier on this film. But then again probably not.
